Cook with Deborah Krasner, James Beard Award-winning cookbook author, and experience Italian life like a native. Shop local markets, visit village cheese makers, taste regional wines, get to know life like a local. We will cook and explore, dine and relax, and enjoy life as Italians do - one glorious day at a time. On different days we'll take various excursions, both near and far. In season we'll visit an olive oil mill, go to local food festivals, and tour a local winery. We will spend one whole day exploring to a farther-away attraction, but every day will be a compelling mix of food tourism, cultural tourism, leisurely breaks, and great cooking fun. We’ll see cheese being made by hand and we’ll try our hand at home-made ricotta. All week long you'll taste and learn to create the authentic flavors of Italy's matchless cuisine.
Starting in 2008, each culinary vacation explores local foods and culinary traditions of different (and fascinating) regions of Italy.
Early Spring finds us in on a rustic organic olive oil estate in Agrigento, Sicily, exploring classic Sicilian foods and Classical sites, or cooking traditional Sicilian Easter and other holiday foods. This working farm is lovely, with vegetable gardens and fruit and nut trees. The main house has a wonderful and evocative kitchen that will be reserved for our use, giving us a chance to really experience cooking in Sicily the way it has always been done. High on a hill near Agrigento, you can see the sea in the distance, and look down on olive groves surrounding the house. You can see more at http://www.fattoriamose.com
In October of 2008, we will be two offering culinary vacations in on a beautiful and elegant estate near Siena, in Tuscany, where we will celebrate the bounty of the Tuscan harvest, and another that looks at the three building blocks of Tuscan cuisine: olive oil, local wine, and local cheese. This location feels like walking into a movie set in Tuscany — buildings painted in mellow shades of apricot, melon and rust; Cyprus trees silhouetted on the horizon, neat fields planted in rows that match the curves of the hills and valleys, and an attractive traditionally-styled house that will accommodate all of us easily. I can't stop thinking about -- and talking about -- our trip. What a wonderful experience. To keep myself sane, I've have changed my screen saver to the photo of us eating under the pergola! Linda, NYC
I cannot tell you what a great time I had with all of you. I keep looking at pictures and daydreaming. I also cannot get enough arugula,
parmesan, sea salt and oil and balsamic vinegar! I miss everyone and Italy so
much. It was very difficult for me to leave on Saturday. I would love to
return in the fall. So many people here at work have asked me for details and how they can go to your classes in Italy. Jayne, NYC
